How To Combat Stress And Anxiety During This Uncertain Time
Who would have thought the world would be here now.
As we navigate the uncertainties of what is and what will be, it can be super stressful ( I know it is for me!)
If you’re like me and already come full of anxiety about the future coupled with our current world situation, it can feel overwhelming and almost like a loss of control.
Not to mention working from home (if it’s something new to you), dealing with children or your partner at home 24/7, pregnancy, and wondering if you will be able to provide for yourself and your family’s basic needs.
5 Ways To Ease Some Of The Overwhelm Of The Unknown
Meditation, though not always easy, has been my first go-to when I get into the bubble of being overwhelmed. My two favorite apps right now are Expectful and Insight Timer. It’s a simple and least expensive way to combat stress and anxiety.
Podcasts have always been something I flow in and out of within my daily routine but now it has become a source of information and somewhat a distraction from the uncertainty. It provides me the opportunity to learn something new, gain insights and feel renewed. Don’t really have any big favorites but will be navigating a few different categories within Entrepreneurship, Self Care/Wellness, Pregnancy and Motherhood, and Relationships.
Music is a part of who I am and my cultural upbringing. Growing up in a Jamaican house, I was introduced to reggae, ska, and calypso so some of those old tunes are popping up in my head as a way to guide me on this journey. It has provided me with a moment to get my body moving and you know like the great Bob Marley says “when it hits you feel no pain.” Some of the new school dancehall and roots have been in rotation too. A good one that could not have come at a better time is Jah9’s Note to Self (Okay) ft. Chronixx. Take a look at the stunning visuals and experience the soothing mantra to find peace in this time at the end of this post.
Ancestors are the ones who are often there to guide us and be of support in the spiritual realm. In this time of confusion, I have been finding solace in getting in front of my altar honoring my ancestors, and asking for their continued support. Even though I know they are always around me it feels like going to a place to meet them and feel extra protection.
Community/Sisterhood is super important! If we look into Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, the central need for us as human beings is love and belonging. For me, family is always around, for some that may not be an option. Though we crave not only the love and belonging of social groups outside of our family, because let’s face it, they don’t always get it. Being in social isolation with family I have found that it is important for me to be part of uplifting communities and sisterhoods. A group I find to be helpful is The Goal Accelerator Club with Nicole Mclaren Campbell. I feel like this group gives me a good dose of sisterhood and community as a Caribbean woman, entrepreneur, and mama on a quest to continually explore self and grow not only for myself but the future generations.
These five methods that I have incorporated are helpful and can definitely be for you. Though, I would love to remind you that not all things work the same for everyone so allow my current methods of guidance through uncertainty to be a loose guide for you.
Take what you need and be flexible and gentle with yourself. And here’s that soothing roots reggae mantra for you to take with you.
